As the demand for high data rate services continues to increase, so do concerns about the capacity of the already crowded radio frequency (RF) spectrum. In order to meet the growing demands caused by advanced media applications and the expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT), optical wireless communication (OWC) systems have emerged as a complementary or alternative solution to RF technology and infrastructure. With optical fiber communication networks in place as the current backbone of modern communication networks, the optical spectrum is already seen as a natural partner, complete with a host of operational and technical advantages.

X-lumin’s terrestrial, short-range Optical Wireless Communication (XOWC) system is made up of terminals that incorporate the latest advancements in telecom hardware and photonics technology. The terminals can be mounted on a host of fixed or mobile surfaces or assets for permanent or temporary scenarios. Addressing both commercial and DoD requirements in a cost-effective manner, XOWC offers secure, line-of-sight (LOS) communication and is compatible with existing fiber networks. The system’s housing can be custom designed to specific deployment parameters allowing it to meet a variety of weight, size and portability requirements. Its compact size, built-in atmospheric turbulence compensation, and weatherized package make it ideally suited to a variety of applications. 

Because XOWC supports DWDM architecture, the system is compatible and can securely integrate into a variety of diverse, compartmented networks such as banking, data warehousing, 4G & 5G platforms, mobile tactical operations, short-haul Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and space-to-ground scenarios. 

Behind the scenes, X-lumin’s Operating System – XOS – manages the XOWC state-of-the-art pointing and tracking capabilities and provides a highly configurable user interface that operates on multiple platforms to include: Windows, Linux, Mac, Android and IOS.
